Crossfitting for 30 months
I have been a Certified Fitness Instructor for over 15 years. I have a Black Belt in Taekwondo and I earned a Full Contact National Sparring Title in 1999. I am also an Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver and I log 1500+ miles on my bike each year in addition to my weekly lifting schedule.........I thought I was in pretty good shape until I was introduced to CrossFit through my friend Brian Maro. I had heard him talk about it several times and thought to myself “I could do that”, so I accepted his challenge to give it a try for two weeks. I assumed I would show up to “his” gym and show him how fit I really was. The problem was I wasn’t in nearly as good a shape as I imagined myself to be.
Even after all the hours I logged in the gym, on my bike, and doing all the other activities I enjoyed I was HUMBLED by my initial performance and AMAZED at the shape the CrossFit athletes were in. I now average five days a week at CrossFit and I am totally hooked!
I am 35 years old and in the ABSOLUTE BEST shape of my life; even better shape than I was in high school! Two days before my 35th birthday I even started to see my abdominal muscles! I had worked out hard (or so I thought) for the last 15 years and had just accepted the fact that my “body type" was never going to allow me to have visible abs.
During a recent physical, my Doctor told me that my cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure were the best they have EVER been and that I was in better shape than most of the 18 year olds he gave sports physicals to that week.
Even the low back pain that has plagued me for many years due to a herniated disc is gone. I have actually strengthened my back to the point where it supports itself and I no longer have to get the epidural pain injections which I have been receiving regularly for the last 5 years.
In a recent workout, I completed 150 pull-ups, 150 kettlebell swings (with a 70 lb kettlebell) and ran 2.5 miles all in less than 1 hour. This would have been impossible for me to accomplish doing any other type of training!
Every week I CrossFit I can see my times improving, my form getting better, and my lifts getting heavier -- all while my body is the leanest and meanest it has EVER been! I ream now a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer and am now actively training others and spreading the word about the benefits of CrossFit!
